Primary Research

Through the Independent Study and Mentorship Program, I am able to interview and interact with professionals in my chosen topic of interest. Since I had chosen to focus on sports medicine and injury prevention during my ISM 2 journey, I first reached out to my connections within the Dallas Mavericks Ballkid program. With Coach Grassi’s assistance in getting me a few contacts, I was able to secure an interview with Dr. Sophia Ulman. Going into the interview, I was fascinated by Dr. Ulman’s career in research and her similar interests in sports specialization and overuse injuries. I wanted to learn more about her career and see if she potentially had any feedback or advice to help guide my future research. 

For my second informational interview, I was able to conduct an interview with Dr. Frankie Tan. After speaking to my father to see if he could get me in contact with Dr. Tan, we were able to set up a Zoom call at the time that worked best for the both of us. Prior to the interview, I was looking forward to learning more about his career in the world of sports medicine in Singapore and identifying how it differed from the sports medicine careers offered in the United States. Since I had already finished my original work by the time I had confirmed the interview, I was more focused on learning about the wider array of careers that the field of sports medicine has to offer and what other opportunities I could potentially explore in my future.
