Face Masks or Fashion

What is more important: safety or how others perceive you?

For most, the answer is safety. That is why we have laws and regulations in place to ensure our safety in our daily lives. However, my most recent research assessment revealed that many football athletes don’t wear the guardian caps (which is an additional piece padding placed on top of the regulation football helmet that is meant to prevent the risk of concussion) because of their “weird” or “not swag” appearance. Even though guardian caps may not be the most effective in preventing concussions, the refusal to implement an injury prevention device is concerning.

This revelation made me realize that if I wanted to create a piece of injury prevention equipment for my original work, I would likely need to build upon or within the currently existing helmet design. Using my past research assessments, I will begin to start sketching up the first drafts of the new design that I would like to use. Most likely, I will add more padding and a way to stabilize the head in order to reduce the impact of contact that usually results in concussions. Hopefully this addition will be more aesthetically appealing to football players so that they are more willing to implement the injury prevention equipment.

That is all from me this week. I will keep you updated on my original work journey during my next blog!
