First Down

Football games can become extremely hectic. There is the chaos of the game, a cacophony of sound coming from the fans, and the oppressive heat radiating from the sun. With so much going on at once, people tend to not notice how much work is being done on the sidelines.

This past week, I worked as a student athletic trainer during our varsity football game and my multitasking skills were put to the test. There were players requesting water, cramping up, and bleeding on their uniforms, all at the same time. While there are multiple other student athletic trainers, I found myself constantly busy throughout the game, either running to refill my bottles or getting players pickle juice to reduce the cramping. Some people may see the work as tedious, but my time spent on the sidelines further cemented my passion for working in the sports medicine field.

The entire experience was eye opening and has encouraged me to continue to dig deeper into the fields of sports medicine and orthopaedic surgery. I have begun my research for ISM into the topic of orthopaedic surgery and started researching more about the career. More specifically, how sports medicine professionals can play a vital role in games from the sideline. With that said, I have completed my first down and look forward to all of the future ones I will have to face both as an athletic trainer and an ISM student.
