When people are good at something, whether it’s a sport or giving a speech, they have to practice and be prepared. Most people are not able to be successful at completing tasks as a novice until they have practiced multiple times. Thus, it is important to practice a subject when you are new to it if you would like to be successful at it.
As we are getting closer to the Business Symposium, we have begun to prepare more materials for when we interact with potential mentors. Today in particular, we were tasked with writing an elevator pitch for ourselves in 10 minutes. While the writing process was not difficult, many people struggled with giving the pitch for the first time. However, after the first run through of some less successful pitches, the class as a whole was asked to practice what we wanted to say with a partner before attempting to deliver it to the class again. After the practice, the pitches given were much better and more fluid than the ones given originally. With more practice, the whole class was more prepared and able to successfully give high-quality elevator pitches.
This is just one example of how practice can lead to success. As I continue my journey through ISM, I will need to continue to prepare materials so that I will be able to get the most out of the program. Overall, I am excited for what the future will continue to bring and will be as prepared as possible. As everyone has always heard before, practice makes perfect!
