Since I updated you last, I’ve been able to visit my mentor 3 times! During the first one, I was able to talk to Dr. Ulman about my plans for my final product and put a system in place for scheduling future visits. She offered me an array of suggestions for things that I could add to my final product and proposed that I focus my final product on the biomechanical or clinical research paper writing process. Dr. Ulman also mentioned that I could potentially add a guide on how to navigate research article databases, such as PubMed, to make the process smoother for people who are not familiar with them.
My next visit provided me with an opportunity to observe how the researchers in the Movement Science Lab utilize the technology of infrared markers to track the movement of athletes. They first began by placing a large amount of markers on the participant, trying to place them more specifically on the bony areas. The patient was then asked to complete a series of tasks to gain data on the movement patterns that would be later analyzed for a grant-funded research study. It was very interesting to see the markers be used actively and how that translates over to data collection.
My more recent visit was unfortunately cut short due to the fact that the intended participant did not show up, but I learned that not everything goes to plan with research. Instead, there are often bumps or other obstacles that will need to be faced in order to eventually succeed. Overall, I’ve found each mentor visit to be very insightful and will continue to use each one to help me develop my final product!
