Title: Key Experiences

Chloe Cheong

Within the last 24 hours, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Scottish Rite and Dallas Mavericks Combine. I was fortunate enough to receive the information about volunteering for the event from my mentor and immediately signed up!

When I first arrived at the event, I was pleasantly surprised that I knew a big chunk of the Dallas Mavericks staff at the Combine event, despite the fact that I was there as a volunteer for Scottish Rite. In particular, I saw many of the coaches from the Dallas Mavericks Ballkid program, making me feel more at ease. I also met a wide array of friendly Scottish Rite volunteers, ranging from UT Southwestern researchers to Scottish Rite employees to other high school students.

The Combine itself was an event where a group of around 40 middle school athletes went through a series of stations to test the physiology of their bodies. I worked at the single leg squat station and helped to log the issues with each athlete’s squat. The four main things we had to look out for were pelvic drop, poor trunk control, knee collapse, or excessive forward bending of the athlete’s knee. By taking note of each of the mistakes each athlete made, we were able to identify the potential for an injury in the future and provided each of them with a list of exercises to help reduce that risk.

I had so much fun at the Mavs Combine and look forward to all of the other unique opportunities I will have during my mentorship process!
