Giving a speech to a group of people is usually pretty nerve wracking for most people. However, nearly everyone will have to give at least one speech throughout their life, a canon event if you will. Leading up to the speech, the only thing you can really do to prepare yourself is to memorize the speech and practice how you would like to deliver your speech. Despite that, the final one isn’t always executed as it was planned.
Last week, I was able to give my research speech during my ISM class. Through this, I shared the information that I have gathered throughout my time in the program. Beginning with overuse injuries and ending with my plans for my original work, I was able to share the main points of my research with my audience.
Even though I practiced my speech numerous times, I still got nervous when standing in front of the entire class. As I got nervous, I started to talk faster and skipped a couple of talking points here and there. This led to me finishing my speech slightly early. Fortunately, I knew the content well enough so I was able to cover all of the major points in my research. The feedback from my classmates was also positive as they liked the information and how I organized the presentation.
As I continue my journey in ISM, I will work on improving my presentation skills. Public speaking skills are important to have in most professions. I am grateful that I have the opportunity to continue to hone these skills and will utilize them in the future.
